Walking Tour

Revolutionary New York Trail

Take this National Park Service Ranger-guided tour of Revolutionary War era Lower Manhattan and explore the oft forgotten sites and stories on New York's path from treasured British colony to capital of a new nation.

Led on a group headset system, you will also hear audio commentary from noted experts including; Mike Wallace, author of Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 and Chris Moore, a historian at New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. On your tour you will:

  • Visit Federal Hall National Memorial, the site of the first capitol where George Washington was inaugurated and the Bill of Rights drafted.
  • See Trinity Church and its graveyard, the final resting place of Revolutionary War heroes Alexander Hamilton and Francis Lewis.
  • Stroll through St. Paul's Chapel where Washington worshiped and where his pew still stands. You'll have the pleasure of being in one of the few surviving structures of the era.
  • Stand at Fraunces Tavern and learn about the rebel spy Samuel Fraunces who aided the Sons of Liberty in their plot against the British overlords.
  • Sum up your tour in Bowling Green Park where colonists tore down the statue of King George III after the reading of the Declaration of Independence in City hall Park- another site on your journey.
