Ranger-led Walking Tour

The New Amsterdam Trail

Begins at Castle Clinton & ends at Federal Hall across from the NYSE. Stops include the sites of Stuyvesant's house, Fort Amsterdam & more.

National Park Service Rangers take you through the island's original streets to explore New Amsterdam, the 17th century Dutch settlement that became New York. On the way you'll hear stories about the first group of settlers who conquered the wilderness; the pirates, prostitutes and preachers who roamed the streets; and the strongman who tamed the bawdy outpost, only to lose it to the mighty British Empire.

Led on a group headset system, this one-hour walking tour through Lower Manhattan features audio clips from noted historians and writers including Russell Shorto, author of the bestselling book, The Island at the Center of the World.
