Hoarse Notes of the Great Ships

One hears the hoarse notes of the great ships in the river, and one remembers suddenly the princely girdle of proud, potent tides that bind the city, and suddenly New York blazes like a magnificent jewel in its fit setting of sea, and earth, and stars.

One of the most noted American novelists and short story writers of the twentieth century; North Carolina-born Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938) was not a native New Yorker but fell for one. After his graduation from Harvard, he moved to the city and became an English instructor at Washington Square College of New York University, all the while saving his salary to set sail for Europe. On his return voyage in 1925, he met Aline Bernstein, a set and costume designer married to a wealthy stockbroker. During their passionate affair, he wrote the critical success, Look Homeward, Angel, finishing the novel in New York and dedicating it to his New York love.
