Floyd Bennett Garden Association

Workshop Schedule

The Floyd Bennett Garden Association runs workshops about gardening and plant materials. Learn about edible gardens at the biggest community garden on the east coast and start planning you fall garden early. Call 718-338-3799 for more information.

Governors Island Exhibits & Events

Calendar of Events

Governors Island is hosting a variety of public arts programming. The island is open from 10am to 7pm every Saturday, Sunday and Holiday Monday (Memorial Day and Labor Day) through September 29.

Historic Aircraft Restoration Project [HARP]

A dedicated group of individuals, part of NPS' Volunteers-In-Parks program work on Gateway National Recreation Area's collection of historic aircraft at Floyd Bennett Field. The goal is to return the aircrafts to nearly original condition, although volunteers have also reproduced a full scale model of Wiley Post's Lockheed Vega, "The Winnie Mae" from scratch!

HANGAR TOURS: Daily, 2-3:30pm

Learn about the aircraft collection on a guided tour led by volunteers and Park Rangers.

PUBLIC OBSERVATION IN HANGAR B: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, 9am-3pm, Hangar B

Wander in and watch the volunteers at work as they go about restoring the collection. To learn about volunteer opportunities or to schedule a group tour, call 718-338-3799.

River to River Festival

Calendar of Events

The River To River month-long art festival celebrates Lower Manhattan with 150 performances and exhibits at 28 locations. Enjoy some summertime culture at unexpected sites in this historic and vibrant neighborhood. The festival runs June 15 to July 14.

Rockaway Artists Alliance Programs

Calendar of Events

The Rockaway Artists Alliance hosts painting classes and live music at a weekly open mic night throughout the summer.

Sandy Hook Beach Concerts

Concert Schedule

Sandy Hook is open for the summer! The Sandy Hook Foundation presents the popular and free summer concert series at Beach Area E every Wednesday at 6 p.m. throughout the summer, weather permitting.

Staten Island OutLOUD

Upcoming Events

Enjoy grass-roots readings of American literature, world classics, and historic texts, as well as writing workshops and spoken-word performances. All of the events are free and some are located in Fort Wadsworth, overlooking the harbor.

OUTDOOR RECREATION

Camping - Floyd Bennett Field

Floyd Bennett Field has more than 30 overnight campsites, with accommodations for recreational vehicles. Read more about camping at Floyd Bennett Field and download the campground map. Reserve online at www.recreation.gov.

Summer programs include day camps and overnight camps:

CAMP GATEWAY RANGER ADVENTURE: Saturdays & Sundays, June 1-September 1, 9:30-11:30am, Wiley Post Group Campfire Ring

Children 6 to 12 years old join the Park Rangers for a nature walk, interactive games, and park exploration. Programs vary each day so call 732-872-5970 for more information and to make reservations.

CAMPFIRE SAFETY: Saturdays, June 1–August 31, 2–3pm, Wiley Post Group Campfire Ring

Learn best practices to create and enjoy a safe campfire. No reservations required and groups are welcome.

FAMILY CAMPING IN THE URBAN OUTBACK: Saturday 2pm-Sunday 12pm, July 6-7, 20-21, August 3-4, 17-18, 31-1, September 14-15, 28-29, Ecology Village Campgrounds

Enjoy overnight camping with Park Rangers. Learn to pitch a tent and build a fire, and partake in a whole range of fun activities like making s'mores, telling stories, kayaking, marine nature study, and hiking. Call 718-338-3338 ext 274, or 718-338-4306 to learn more and make reservations.

Camping - Fort Wadsworth

Staten Island now has overnight camping with 7 new camp sites. Read more about camping at Fort Wadsworth and make reservations online at www.recreation.gov.

Kayaking - Great Kills

Great Kills Park has an expanded kayak program for the season. Beginners and intermediate levels are welcome. Kayaks and other equipment will be provided, or you can bring your own. Dress appropriately for the program.

WALK UP AND PADDLE: Wednesday-Sunday, June-August, 8:30am-5pm, Great Kills Beach Center

Beginners can try out a kayak and go on a 30 minute guided tour on the ocean.

KAYAK LESSONS: Wednesday-Sunday, June-August, 10am, Great Kills Beach Center

Improve your paddling skills and receive water safety instruction from Park Rangers. For all levels of experience.

Kayaking - Jamaica Bay

Private kayaks can be launched at Canarsie Pier, Plumb Beach, North Channel Bridge and Floyd Bennett Field (the Seaplane Ramp or Mill Basin), provided you have an annual permit (available for a small fee at the Floyd Bennett Field visitor center - call 718-338-3799 for information). Take our Jamaica Bay Kayak Map with you when you go.

Paddle along the shores of Floyd Bennett Field on the incoming tide. Land at the Mill Basin Kayak Launch and then enjoy a guided walk back to the start at Seaplane Ramp. (.75 miles) Open to all, good for beginners, ages 6 and up must be accompanied by an adult. Call 718-338-3788 for more information and to make a reservation.

FUN PADDLE AND WALK IN THE PARK: Wednesdays, July 10, 24, and August 21, Thursday, July 11, 1-3pm, Mill Basin Kayak Launch (Remote Control Flying Field)

Paddle along the shores of Floyd Bennett Field on the incoming tide. Land at the Seaplane Ramp and then enjoy a guided walk back to the start at the Mill Basin Kayak Launch. RUFFLE BAR KAYAK EXCURSION: Wednesday, July 3, 5-8pm, Wednesday, July 17, 1-4pm, Friday, July 26, 11:30am-2:30pm, Seaplane Ramp

Paddle around this large island in Jamaica Bay on a 5 mile trip to learn about its history and the plants and animals that inhabit it. Call 718-338-3799 for more information.

FOUR SPARROW MARSH PADDLE: Thursday, July 11, 9:30am-12pm, Friday, July 12, 9-11:30am, Thursday, July 25, 9-11:30am, Wednesday, August 21, 8-10am, Mill Basin Kayak Launch (Remote Control Flying Field)

See the natural sights on this beginner's paddle to the cloistered Four Sparrow Marsh. Open to all ages 6 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

CANARSIE WALK UP AND PADDLE: Saturdays, July 6-August 31, 1-3:30pm, Canarsie Pier

Beginners can try out a kayak. Open to all ages 6 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free and no reservations required.

LET'S GO KAYAKING!: Tuesdays, July 2, 16, 30, August 13, 5-7:30pm, Canarsie Pier

Learn beginner paddling skills and practice kayaking in the calm waters of Jamaica Bay. Kayaks and life vests provided. The program fills up fast so early arrival suggested. Each session runs 30 minutes.

RIIS LANDING WALK UP AND PADDLE: Thursday, July 4, 12-3pm, Sundays, July 7-September 1, 1-4pm, Riis Landing

Beginners can try out a kayak. Open to all ages 6 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free and no reservations required.

KAYAK SKILLS SESSION: Friday, July 12, 19, August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 1-4pm, Riis Landing

Receive instruction and practice kayak strokes and skills each week. Open to all ages 11 and up. Free and no reservations required.

GERRITSEN CREEK KAYAK EXCURSION: Thursday, July 18, August 1, 12-5pm, Gateway Marina

Enjoy an energetic day excursion up Gerritsen Creek and back. See the estuary and then cool off at the Salt Marsh Nature Center. The trip includes the opportunity to go seine fishing along the shore before kayaking back to Gateway Marina. Call 718-338-3799 to make a reservation.

Sailing - Jamaica Bay

FAMILY SAILING: Fridays, July 12-August 24, 9-11am, Gateway Marina

Families will enjoy sailing and the environment of Dead Horse Bay. Program is free, reservations required. Space is limited. For reservations, call 718-338-3799.

INDIVIDUAL SAILING INSTRUCTION: Thursdays, June 27-August 29, 6-8pm, Gateway Marina

Each class consists of three consecutive sessions where participants will learn the basic skills of sailing. There is a $50 fee for the program. For reservations, call 718-338-3799.

YOUTH GROUP SAILING: Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays, July 9-August 29, 9-11am, Gateway Marina

Groups will learn about sailing and the environment of Dead Horse Bay. Program is free, reservations required. Space is limited. For reservations, call 718-338-3799.

Walking – Floyd Bennett Field

A WALK IN THE PARK: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, May 6–June 28, 10–11am, Ryan Visitor Center

An organized brisk walk to the Ranger Station and back, passing through the Hangar Row Historic District. No reservations required.
