Projects

The National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy is now spearheading an imaginative and substantive array of new programs, projects and activities launching the finest urban waterfront park system in the world for residents and visitors alike -- and then helping them get there. It bodes well that since founded in 2005, nearly 80% of the Harbor Conservancy's contributions have been used for programming -- including a new Visitor Center at Federal Hall National Memorial.

Waterborne: the Inner-Outer Harbor Long Range Strategy

The Harbor Conservancy's efforts will result in a seamless waterborne transportation system, the key ingredient for making harbor parks accessible. It is now creating an actionable strategy to link inner and outer harbor destinations and to develop a comprehensive plan for maximizing tourism to these inaccessible destinations.

Boat TourMultimedia Harbor Tour Products

The Harbor Conservancy is developing and launching a series of audio tours utilizing existing and emerging technologies and focusing on various untold stories of the Harbor, including defense, immigration and commerce.

  • Gateway to America, which debuted October 2005, explores the importance of New York Harbor and how immigration, commerce, defense, the environment and history have shaped our city and continue to do so today.
  • The Military History of New York Harbor, which debuted May 2007, tells how Federal parklands and other sites on the harbor, such as Brooklyn Navy Yard and Fort Hamilton, hold the complete and untold history of our nation's defense, from the evolving development of military technology, fortifications, armaments and aircraft, to the history of flight.

Interactive Web Experience of New York Harbor

The Harbor Consevancy will maintain an experiential web destination for harbor tourism, featuring interactivity and special pioneering features to enhance the harbor tourism experience.

Civic Engagement Programming

The Harbor Conservancy will convene lectures and produce exhibitions to educate the public about New York Harbor and the 23 national parks and historic sites that call the harbor home. In November 2006, it launched Federal Hall Visitor Center.

Environment

The Harbor Conservancy will educate the public on the resource protection goals of the National Park Service, in particular Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, a case study for global warming. Restoration and protection of wetlands and the estuary are of vital importance.
