Howard Dodson
Howard Dodson is the Director of the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center and Howard University Libraries. He recently served as the Chief of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of The New York Public Library from 1984-2010, where he curated exhibitions, produced humanities and performing arts programs and developed the Schomburg Center into the premier public research library in the world devoted to documenting the global black experience.
Prior to assuming his position at the Schomburg Center, Mr. Dodson served as a consultant in the Office of the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C. He also served in a number of capacities at the Institute of the Black World in Atlanta, GA, including Executive Director from 1974-1979.
Mr. Dodson served as Chair of the Federal Steering Committee for the African Burial Ground and was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone. He was a member of the President's Commission on the National Museum of African American History and Culture and was formerly a member of the Board of Directors of the Apollo Theater and serves on the Scientific and Technical Committee of the UNESCO Slave Route Project.
Mr. Dodson's publications include Jubilee: The Emergence of African American Culture, In Motion: The African American Migration Experience and Becoming American: The African American Journey.
